Bacteriostatic water is a sterile solution containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which acts as a preservative. It's used primarily in medical settings to:

1. Reconstitute or dilute medications
2. Flush intravenous lines
3. Prepare injectable solutions

2. Inhibits bacterial growth: Doesn't kill bacteria but prevents their multiplication
